| Thurs 17th July | 10.30am | Pick up from St Angela’s College |
| Days opens with a short visualisation and presentation with questions and answers. The aim is to give you a sense of the different time periods in Ireland and the monuments associated with these times so you will better understand the sites you will visit. | ||
| 11.00am | The first site visit is to Knocknarea (Mountain of the Moon), the mountain top burial place of warrior Queen Maeve of Connaught. Maeve’s Cairn is probably the most spectacularly located prehistoric monument in Ireland. From the top you will look down on one of the major cultural and ritual areas in Neolithic Ireland. | |
| 1.00pm | Just in time for lunch, it’s over to the Kitchen Middens in Sligo Bay. The Middens are made up predominantly of shells; oysters, mussels, clams etc. This “compost” heap is evidence of a place where people gathered in antiquity. Like the ancient people, indulge in nature’s bounty and have a seafood picnic on the beach. Enjoy smoked Irish salmon on Irish brown bread and a vegetarian option will also be available | |
| 3.00pm | Rounding the day off is a visit to Tobernault Well. A visit to this holy well will give you an opportunity to witness rituals that have continued since prehistoric times. Still much in use today by the local people, you will see water being taken from the well for the cure, and personal items tied to trees for intentions. If you are lucky, you may meet the self appointed caretaker “Foggie” and he is sure to share some of his stories with you! | |
| 4:00pm | Drop Back to St Angela’s College |
